Thang Eric’s first gold and diamond-plated cellphones decorating firm in Vietnam has stirred up the cellphone accessories market causing Cambodian Royal.“Two insane guys” and a passion
Taking us to a spacious five-storey house in a deep lane off a street in Tan Phu District (Ho Chi Minh City), Thang Eric – owner of the only gold and diamond-plated cellphone decorating firm in Vietnam “cleverly” aroused our curiosity by getting us right to the living room.

He explained: “Not because we do not want to take you to each room and visit our decorating procedure but because our staff are not ready. So please have a seat and wait for us a bit, then I will show you around. But I have one small request that you please do not take photos since we do not want to publicize these things”.

Thang Eric, born in 1980, was a guy with “crazy blood” (word used by Thang), who has passion for technology and business since a small child. To satisfy his passion, in 2000, his family backed him to enroll in technology courses in Nottingham University (England).

Living in a country full of “rebellion” in the technology market, Thang always obsessed himself with building an eccentric and high-ranked Vietnamese brand. He was not hesitant to work for those big cellphone firms in England to learn technical skills and satisfy his creative curiosity.

It took 4 months for five skillful craftsmen to form the ideas and 2 months of continuous work to complete a product. An image of Ly Dynasty’s dragon is embossed on the cover plated with a four taels of 18k gold and 540 natural diamonds; in which 539 diamonds are used for the dragon body and a red ruby for the dragon’s eye. This unique cellphone was sold for 550 million Vietnam Dong (including the cellphone).

After completing the course in England, Thang returned to his home country with a burning passion to be the owner of a gold and diamond-plated cellphone handcrafted decorating business. In this overwhelmingly passionate and crazy time, Thang accidentally met Thanh – a skillful jewelry craftsman, who had lived in seclusion for more than a half of a decade. Two “insane blood” people met, one full of creativity and the other in ripening stage of artisanship and immediately they immersed themselves in searching, experimenting and creating relentlessly. The result of this is  they hit success when the first cellphone covers mounted with diamond and plated with gold using handcrafting techniques enjoyed great admiration and man compliments upon their release.

“We started to study in 2008 but it took until 10/10/2010 to launch our brand Golden Ace. Of course, in order to have such a gorgeous opening show with a lot of notice and admiration  from “big brothers and sisters” in technology, we had to overcome a lot of difficulties. Failure did sometimes discourage us but then our “insane blood” raised us up” – shared Thang Eric.

Thang showed: The first perfect products that were produced are 18k gold covers for Iphone 3GS; in which the most “painstaking” and elaborate one is named “Ly Dynasty’s dragon”. In order to have this product, it took 4 months for five skillful craftsmen to form the ideas and 2 months of continuous work to complete the product. An image of Ly Dynasty’s dragon is embossed on the cover plated with a four taels of 18k gold and 540 natural diamonds; in which 539 diamonds are for the dragon body and a red ruby for the dragon’s eye. This unique cellphone was sold for 550 million Vietnam Dong (including the cellphone). A Vietnamese overseas ordered this cellphone as a gift for his business partner.

“This cellphone now is worth more than 1 billion Vietnam Dong. This is the most famous cellphone by Golden Ace. It affirms the name and marks the advent of our brand. Actually, at first I would like to use this cellphone to attend the 1000-year-old Thang Long Celebration but due to the delay of production, it was sold as a commercial product” Thang revealed.

The three special guests that day ordered a cover mounted with diamonds (10.5 k with 12,000 USD value), a custom designed back cover plated with gold and mounted with diamonds (valued 16,000 USD).

Pay 30 million Vietnam Dong per month to the craftsman

After “keeping the guests”, finally Thang Eric took us around the firm. It can be said that, being trained in England, Thang is very sharp and subtle in managing and operating the decorating procedure. At all stages the procedure must be secure, which makea all materials, equipment and technology confidential. The tiny gold dust is also kept by a very sophisticated technology.

Now Thanh and Thang are not in the same boat but Thang did find a crew of 5 skillful craftsmen “selected” from the North – Central – South. This crew is all male with the youngest of 32 years old, the oldest of 44 years old. All five were sent to study the skill in Switzerland. They are paid by hour and the average salary is from 12 million to 25 million, depending on the position.

Its uniqueness has made Cambodian Royal come and order the product by themselves in person.

Thang shared that all jobs requiring detailed skills like mountung diamond or plating gold normally need skillful hands of a female rather than male but the technique is from Europe and when doing it, it has to be done with a magnifier, which can damage the eye easily. Thang himself does not like the “mixed blood”, thus he takes the Western technology but uses Vietnamese materials and skills to create a Vietnamese product. Thang would like to showcase the talent of Vietnamese people to all countries in the world like France, Switzerland, Italy, Bulgaria… (all these countries have reached the peak of high-end cellphone’s cover making technology).

“All of our products are made by hand but follow strictly the European techniques requiring high levels of accuracy. Those who can perform this technique must be trained accordingly in Europe and if trained in Vietnam, they cannot do it. A product is made through 5 stages: design, wax, die cast, form (model by wax and die cast), attach the stones, plate and complete. If the second and fourth stage go wrong, then it has to be done again” Thang said.

With materials like diamond and gold, Golden Ace usually get them mainly from SJC, BNJ… while Soaropski is always the good choice since it is one kind of diamond with sparkling colors and international standard quality. Golden Ace is going to cooperate with two of Vietnam’s leading diamond suppliers – SJC and SBI to evaluate all valuable stones for decorateding on gold. Each type of valuable stone used will be taken photos of and its specifications will be placed on products’ cover after completion.

Thang shared: “In each product, I always try to show to the customers which part is very elaborate, authentic and which one should go with which valuable stone. It is not necessary that diamond and gold should be used for all products to make it luxurious but sometimes we just need some noticeable points to make the products shine.”

Since its launch, more than 500 customers have come and ordered products at Thang Eric’s firm; In which the most special guest that until now both Thang and his crew cannot forget has been Cambodian Royals.

Just a few months ago, on a sunny day Thang was so shocked to see cars with a police escort parking right in front of the firm. Stepping down the from the car appeared the Queen and Chairman of Cambodian Parliament. These valuable customers had come to know about Thang’s firm via the website and when they came to Vietnam, they asked people to take them to order products.

The three special guests that day ordered a cover entirely mounted with diamond (10.5 k with 12,000 USD value), a custom designed back cover plated with gold and mounted with diamond (valued 16,000 USD). However, because the customers did not allow taking photos, there are no pictures of these products after completion.

After the famous cover with Ly Dynasty’s dragon, the firm continues to produce Iphone 4 with 472 diamonds, which is worth nearly 10,000 USD. Not ending there, Thang Eric has been looking for ways to get lacquer, fine arts and crafts into his products but still ensure its interesting uniqueness. Besides the cover, Thang has also started to produce some packaging for the cellphone. Now, in addition to the headquarters in HCMC, Thang’s firm has expanded to Bac Ninh, Ha Noi, Can Tho and even Las Vegas, USA.
